Old Kannada inscription dated Shaka 990 (c.1068 AD) of Kalyani (Western) Chalukya King Bhuvanaikamalla Someshvara II
Old Kannada inscription from 1068 AD about King Someshvara II

Someshvara II became the king of the Western Chalukya kingdom in 1068 CE. He took over after his father, Someshvara I. Before becoming king, Someshvara II managed the area around Gadag. He was the oldest son of Someshvara I. His younger brother, Vikramaditya VI, was very ambitious. Vikramaditya often challenged Someshvara II. Later, Vikramaditya took the throne from Someshvara. Around 1070 CE, Someshvara II made his kingdom bigger. He took control of a region called Malava.

Chola Attack

Soon after Someshvara II became king, the Chola army attacked. Their leader was Virarajendra Chola. The Chola army entered the Chalukya lands. They surrounded the town of Gutti in the Kurnool district. They also attacked Kampili. Instead of helping his brother, Vikramaditya saw this as a chance. He used his brother's problems to try and become king himself.

Vikramaditya's Plan

Vikramaditya saw the confusion caused by the Chola attack. He used this chance to his advantage. Vikramaditya made a deal with Virarajendra, the Chola leader.

Chalukya Family War

The situation changed a lot when Virarajendra died in 1070. His son, Athirajendra Chola, became the new Chola king. Later, Kulothunga Chola I became the Chola king. This happened after some trouble and Athirajendra was killed. Vikramaditya did not get along with Kulothunga. So, Someshvara II made a deal with Kulothunga. They planned to attack Vikramaditya together.

The fight happened in 1075. Kulothunga attacked Vikramaditya. Someshvara helped Kulothunga by attacking Vikramaditya from behind. This led to a short family war. Someshvara lost badly in this war. We do not know what happened to him after his defeat. Vikramaditya captured the Chalukya king. He put Someshvara in prison. In 1076, Vikramaditya VI announced he was the new Chalukya king.
