Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sommer Elizabeth Gentry is an amazing American mathematician. She teaches math at the United States Naval Academy and also helps with research in surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Gentry studies how to make things work better, especially when it comes to organ transplants. Her work has even shown that where people live can affect how they get organs.

Dr. Gentry also loves to dance! She teaches swing dancing at the Naval Academy. In fact, her Ph.D. project was all about the math and robots involved in dancing.

Early Life and Education

Sommer Gentry grew up in California. When she was a girl, she loved reading about fun math puzzles by writers like Martin Gardner. These stories inspired her to keep studying mathematics.

In 1993, while she was a senior at Thousand Oaks High School, Sommer had the highest score in the Ventura County, California Academic Decathlon. This was a big achievement!

She went to Stanford University and graduated in 1998. She earned two degrees: one in math and computer science, and another in engineering and operations research.

Later, she earned her Ph.D. (a very high degree) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005. Her special project was called Dancing cheek to cheek: haptic communication between partner dancers and swing as a finite state machine. For this, she used math to understand dance moves. She even programmed a robot to dance! Her goal was to improve how humans and robots could work together, especially in areas like surgery.

Other Activities

Dr. Gentry is married to a surgeon named Dorry Segev. They met at a Lindy Hop dance competition in 1999. A few years later, they even won the British Championship in Lindy Hop! She has also worked with her husband on a program that helps people donate kidneys in a special way, called Kidney Paired Donation.

In 2017, Sommer Gentry was on a TV show called Superhuman.

Awards and Recognition

Sommer Gentry has received many awards for her work.

  • In 2009, she won the Henry L. Alder Award for excellent teaching from the Mathematical Association of America.
  • She received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 2014.
  • In the same year, she was a finalist for the Daniel H. Wagner Prize, which recognizes great work in operations research.
