Soncy was once a small, undeveloped area in Potter County, Texas. An "unincorporated community" means it was not officially a town or city with its own local government. Today, most of Soncy is part of the larger city of Amarillo.
Soncy is an important road in western Amarillo. It connects different parts of the city. You can find Soncy between two famous roads: Interstate 40 and the old U.S. Route 66. These roads are in the Texas Panhandle, which is the northern part of Texas.
The Amarillo Helium Plant
In the early 1930s, something important happened near Soncy. The United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Department of War built a special factory. This factory was called the Amarillo Helium Plant.
The plant was built to get a gas called helium from the ground. Helium is a very light gas. It is used for many things, like filling balloons and in science. This plant was a big deal for the area.
