Sonja Sutter (born January 17, 1931 – died June 1, 2017) was a German actress. She was special because she could act in movies and TV shows made in both East and West Germany. At that time, Germany was divided into two parts.

Many people remember her as Fraulein Rottenmeier in the TV series Heidi [de] from 1978. This show was very popular in Europe during the 1980s and 1990s. It was even translated into many different languages. She also played several roles in the TV series Derrick between 1983 and 1998.

About Sonja Sutter

Sonja Sutter was born in Freiburg, Germany. She went to the Rudolf Steiner School. Even though she had a limited education at first, she later studied Greek and Latin. During this time, she decided she wanted to become an actress.

Her first time acting on stage was in 1950 at the Municipal Theater. After that, she worked in other famous theaters. These included the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and the State Theater in Munich.

Starting her Film Career

A film director named Slatan Dudow discovered Sonja Sutter in 1952. He saw her during a test for a movie. He then cast her in the German movie Frauenschicksale. In this film, she played the role of Renate Ludwig.

After this movie, Sonja Sutter received many offers from West Germany. This made her one of the few actors who could work in both East and West Germany. Her big success came in 1957 with the movie Lissy. This award-winning film made her very well-known in East Germany.

Later Career and Life

During the 1950s, Sonja Sutter acted in several other movies. These included Die Barrings (1955) and Three Birch Trees on the Heath (1956). In 1961, she lost the chance to act in more films made in East Germany. This happened because the Berlin Wall was built, making it harder to travel between East and West.

From 1961 until she passed away, Sonja Sutter lived in Vienna, Austria. She worked at the Burgtheater there. She also appeared in 16 TV movies. She was in popular German TV series like Der Kommissar and Tatort. She played roles in 6 episodes of Derrick from 1983 to 1998.
