Sonnie Hale (born John Robert Hale-Monro on May 1, 1902) was a talented English actor, writer for films, and director. He lived from 1902 to 1959.

Early Life and Family

Sonnie Hale was born in Kensington, London, England. His father, Robert Hale, was an actor, and his mother was Belle Reynolds. Sonnie also had a sister named Binnie Hale, who became an actress too. He went to school at Beaumont College.

Sonnie Hale's Career

Sonnie Hale mostly worked in musical shows and revue theatre, which are like variety shows with music and dancing. He also acted in several movies. Sometimes, he would write scripts or direct films.

His first time performing on stage was in 1921. He was part of the chorus in a show called Fun of the Fayre at the London Pavilion. Later in his career, he invested a lot of his own money into a show that was meant to tour the country. However, World War II started in 1939, and many theatres had to close. This caused him to lose a lot of money.

Plays and Films

Sonnie Hale wrote a play called The French Mistress. It first opened in 1955 at the Wimbledon Theatre. This play was very popular and ran for a long time in London's West End. It was even made into a movie later, also called A French Mistress.

  • He married actress Evelyn Laye in 1926. They divorced in 1930.
  • He then married actress and dancer Jessie Matthews in 1931. They divorced in 1944.
