Sonny Turner (born September 24, 1939 – died January 13, 2022) was an American singer. He came from Fairmont, West Virginia. Sonny Turner became famous for taking over as the main singer for the popular group The Platters. He replaced their previous lead singer, Tony Williams.

Sonny Turner's Musical Journey

Before joining The Platters, Sonny Turner was the main singer for a local group called The Metrotones. One day, while performing in a club in Cleveland, he was noticed by a local DJ named Bill Crane. Bill asked Sonny if he would like to try out for The Platters. Their lead singer, Tony Williams, was planning to leave the group soon.

Sonny Turner was one of 100 people who tried out for the spot. He was chosen in late 1959 to become the new lead singer. Sonny's friend and mentor was the famous singer Jackie Wilson. Sonny brought a fresh sound to The Platters.
