Early Life
Growing Up and Discovering Music
Soovin Kim was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on April 10, 1976. His parents were from South Korea. When he was two, his family moved to Bolingbrook, Illinois. His brother, Marvin, was born two years later. Even though his family wasn't musical, young Soovin loved listening to classical violin music. He often listened with his mother.
Soon, Soovin asked for violin lessons. His friend Jennifer Koh and other friends were also starting lessons. His parents enrolled him in a local Suzuki class. He learned very well from his teacher, William Fuhrburg.
Moving and Advanced Training
In 1985, Soovin's family moved to Plattsburgh, New York. He went to public schools there. He also studied the violin privately. He traveled to Montreal every week to learn from Richard Roberts. Roberts was the concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony.
When he was 13 and 14, Soovin was the concertmaster of the World Youth Orchestra. This was at Michigan's National Music Camp at Interlochen. Both summers, the famous violinist Itzhak Perlman played as a soloist with the orchestra. For five years, Soovin also played with the Vermont Youth Orchestra. This orchestra was conducted by Maestro David Dworkin.
At 15, Soovin attended the Cleveland Institute of Music. There, he studied with Donald Weilerstein and David Cerone. During his summers, Soovin went to Cerone's Encore School for Strings. This was a top summer school for serious string players in Hudson, Ohio.
Career
Music School and Awards
In 1995, Soovin transferred from the Cleveland Institute to the Curtis Institute of Music. At Curtis, he studied with Jaime Laredo and Victor Danchenko. In 1996, Soovin won the Paganini Competition in Genoa. This is a very important violin competition. The next year, he won the Henryk Szeryng Career Award.
Performing and Teaching
Soovin spent his first summer at the Marlboro Festival right after winning the Paganini prize in 1996. This festival was started by Rudolf Serkin and Adolf Busch. It is a special place for artists to practice and perform. Soovin often goes back to the Marlboro Festival.
Soovin moved to New York City in 2005. He also got married that same year. He often performs in Korea. He plays as a soloist and as part of a piano quartet called MIK. This group plays both old and new music. He also tours with other winners of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. He won this award in 2005. When he is not touring, Soovin teaches at SUNY Stony Brook.
