Sophia Frangou is a smart scientist from Greece. She is a professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, USA. There, she leads a special team called the Psychosis Research Program.

Professor Frangou is a respected expert in her field. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and also a Fellow of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). She has held important roles in many scientific groups, helping to guide research and understanding of the brain.

Her Journey to Science

Sophia Frangou finished medical school in Athens, Greece, in 1989. After that, she moved to the United Kingdom. There, she trained to become a psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital in London.

She continued her studies and earned a master's degree in neuroscience from the University of London. Neuroscience is the study of the brain and nervous system. She also trained in the United States at Johns Hopkins University.

Later, she returned to the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. There, she earned her PhD. Her research focused on using brain scans and electrical signals to understand how brain differences might run in families, especially for conditions like schizophrenia. From 1997 to 2013, she worked as a doctor at Maudsley Hospital. She also led her own research team at King's College London.

Understanding the Brain

Professor Frangou's main research looks at how brain conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder happen. She uses many tools to do this. These include looking at genes, how people think, and special brain imaging techniques.

A big part of her work is using neuroimaging. This means taking pictures of the brain. She uses these pictures to see how brain structure and activity might be different in people with these conditions. She also studies how genes might affect the brain's structure and how it connects.

Professor Frangou also works on making brain measurements more standard. This helps doctors and scientists understand how brains change as people grow older. It can also help guide how to diagnose and treat brain conditions. She helps lead a group called the ENIGMA Lifespan Working Group. This group studies brain structure in over 10,000 healthy people, from young children to older adults.
