Sophia Maria Westenholz (born Elenore Sophia Maria Fritscher) was a talented German musician. She was a composer, singer, and music educator. Sophia was born on July 10, 1759, in Neubrandenburg. She grew up in a wealthy family. She spent most of her life in the cities of Schwerin and Ludwigslust. These were the main cities of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

When she was ten, Duke Ludwig asked her to study music. She learned piano and singing with Konzertmeister Johann Wilhelm Hertel in Schwerin. By age sixteen, she was a singer in the court chapel in Ludwigslust. In 1777, she married Carl August Friedrich Westenholz. He was the Kapellmeister, or music director, of the court. They had eight children together.

A Famous Musician

By the 1780s, Sophia Westenholz was very famous. People loved her music in Berlin, Leipzig, Ludwigslust, and Rostock. Important musicians like Ernst Wilhelm Wolf and Carl Friedrich Cramer admired her. Wolf once said her style was like the great Bach in Hamburg. Cramer also praised her balanced and expressive playing.

When her husband Carl died in 1789, Sophia received a special title. She became the Kapellmeisterin at Ludwigslust. This meant she was the music director for the court. She continued to work as a singer, teacher, and pianist. She taught music to the princesses of Ludwigslust. She also wrote and performed her own music for the court.

Besides playing the piano, she was also known for playing the glass harmonica. This is a unique musical instrument. After 1800, she focused more on writing music. Several of her works were published by 1806. A famous composer named Johann Friedrich Reichardt called her "one of the leading musicians of Europe."

Sophia Westenholz retired in 1821. She received a pension, which is like a retirement payment. She continued to be a court singer until she passed away on October 4, 1838.
