Her Early Life and Learning
In May 1980, Sophia Shaningwa left Namibia. She received military training as a combatant for the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN). This group worked for Namibia's independence. Later, she went to the Soviet Union to study at the Ivanova Teachers Training College.
Her Journey in Politics
Sophia Shaningwa has had a long and active career in Namibian politics. In 2004, she became the governor of the Khomas Region. A governor is like a leader for a specific area. Later, she served as the governor for the Omusati Region.
Before becoming a governor, she worked at the National Housing Enterprise. She also served as a local leader, called a councillor, for Windhoek West. In 2014, she was elected to the National Assembly. This is where laws are made for the country.
From 2015 to 2018, Sophia Shaningwa was the Minister for Urban and Rural Development. She worked to improve cities and countryside areas.
