Sophia Shaningwa was born on May 13, 1959, in Outapi, Namibia. She is a well-known politician in Namibia. Currently, she holds an important position as the secretary general of the SWAPO party.

Her Early Life and Learning

Sophia Shaningwa left Namibia in May 1980. During that time, she received military training. She also went to college in the Soviet Union, where she studied at the Ivanova Teachers' Training College.

Sophia Shaningwa has had a long and successful career in politics.

Becoming a Governor

In 2004, she was chosen to be the governor of the Khomas Region. A governor is like a leader for a specific area or region. Later, she also served as the governor for the Omusati Region.

Working in the National Assembly

In 2014, she was elected to the National Assembly. This is where laws are made for the country. Before this, she worked for the National Housing Enterprise. She also served as a local leader, called a councillor, for Windhoek West.

Serving as a Minister

From March 21, 2015, to February 2018, Sophia Shaningwa was the Minister for Urban and Rural Development. She worked under President Hage Geingob. Her ministry worked on important projects, like improving sanitation in rural areas. They received help to remove old bucket toilet systems, which helped make communities healthier.

Leading the SWAPO Party

In 2017, Sophia Shaningwa was elected as the secretary general of the SWAPO party. This is a very important leadership role within the party. She kept this position in 2022, after winning against another candidate, Armas Amukwiyu.

Special Awards

On Heroes' Day in 2014, Sophia Shaningwa received a special award. It was called the Most Distinguished Order of Namibia: First Class. This award recognized her important contributions to the country.
