Madeleine Sophie Wickham, known as Sophie Kinsella, is a famous English writer. She writes fun books, mostly romantic comedies. Her most popular books are the Shopaholic series.
Two of her Shopaholic books were even made into a movie called Confessions of a Shopaholic in 2009. Sophie Kinsella's books are very popular. Over 40 million copies have been sold worldwide. They have been translated into more than 40 languages.
In 2024, her book What Does It Feel Like? was chosen as one of the best books by The New York Times. It was also listed as one of the top five books of the year by The Guardian.

Sophie Kinsella's Early Life
Madeleine Sophie Wickham was born in England. She is the oldest sister of two other writers, Gemma and Abigail Townley. Sophie went to several schools, including Putney High School.
She later studied at New College, Oxford, a famous university. She first studied Music, but then changed to Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE). Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a journalist, writing about money.
Her Writing Career
Sophie Kinsella wrote her first novel when she was 24 years old. It was published when she was 26. This book, The Tennis Party, was a big hit. It quickly became a top ten bestseller.
She wrote six more novels under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. These books include A Desirable Residence and Swimming Pool Sunday.
Becoming Sophie Kinsella
Sophie Kinsella started using a pen name, which is a fake name for writing. She chose "Sophie Kinsella" from her middle name and her mother's maiden name. Her first book under this new name was sent to publishers without her real name. Everyone loved it!
She finally told people her real identity when her book Can You Keep a Secret? came out in 2003.
The Shopaholic Series
Sophie Kinsella is best known for her Shopaholic novels. These books are about a character named Becky Bloomwood. Becky is a financial journalist, but she has trouble managing her own money. She loves shopping a lot, which often leads to funny problems in her life. The books also show her relationship with a character named Luke.
The first two Shopaholic books were turned into a movie in 2009.
Other Books
Sophie Kinsella has written many other popular books. Some of her recent Shopaholic books include "Shopaholic to the Rescue" (2015) and "Christmas Shopaholic" (2019).
She has also written many standalone novels, which are not part of a series. These include My Not So Perfect Life (2017) and The Burnout (2023). In 2015, she wrote her first book for young adults, called Finding Audrey.
One of her novels, Sleeping Arrangements, was even made into a musical in London in 2013.
Sophie Kinsella's Personal Life
In 1991, Sophie Kinsella married Henry Wickham. They met while studying at Oxford University. Henry used to be a school headmaster and now helps manage her writing business.
They live in Dorset and London. They have four sons and one daughter.
In 2024, Sophie Kinsella shared that she was dealing with a serious health challenge.
