Soup is a fun claymation cartoon show from New Zealand. It first aired in 2002 on TVNZ. The show was created by Jamie Canard. It had three seasons, with 10 episodes in each season. Each episode was about five minutes long. Soup was shown as part of the children's TV programme What Now.

The show is all about the lives of made-up creatures living in a swamp. The way the show looks was inspired by another cartoon called The Trap Door. You'll see all sorts of creatures in Soup, from big, scary monsters to tiny, quick-moving things. Many of them have big eyes on top of their heads!

Meet the Characters

Here are some of the main characters you'll meet in the swamp:

  • Roger Lizard: Roger often tells us what's happening in the swamp. He seems to keep an eye on everything. He has a special book with pictures of all the swamp's creatures. He uses it to figure out who's who!
  • Bronwyn and Flip: These two are the main characters of the show.
  • Policeslug Nigel: Nigel is a police officer, but he's a snail! He helps keep order in the swamp.
  • Roland: Roland is a pink creature. He has only one hand on top of a single, strong leg. His one big eye is on his hand. Roland appears in many episodes, but he speaks in a language that no one understands.
  • A starfish-like creature: This creature has a name that sounds like a popping noise!

Roger, Bronwyn, Flip, and Policeslug Nigel are the only characters who talk regularly.

Swamp Creatures

The swamp is full of many different creatures. Some of them can talk, and some cannot.

Talking Creatures

  • Two snails: These snails often deliver messages. They usually carry notes between Roger and Policeslug Nigel.
  • Two Grizzlefish: These fish like to hunt and eat almost every other creature in the swamp. But there's one creature they are afraid of: the Bobfiend!
  • The Bobfiend: This creature loves to scare the Grizzlefish. Other than that, the Bobfiend is quite harmless and doesn't cause much trouble.

Other Swamp Inhabitants

Many other creatures live in the swamp, but they don't talk. Some of them have special names:

  • Frog Monster
  • Giant Jellymonster: This big monster is afraid of snails! Even though it doesn't talk, in one episode it sings a lullaby to Roland that you can almost understand.
  • Shrieking Crab: This crab uses a plant called freaky moss to decorate its shell.
  • Speeding Rocket Beetle
  • Spotted Scaredy Menace
  • Strobe: If you touch a Strobe, it flashes a bright, blinking light.

Swamp Plants and Fungi

The swamp also has some unique plants and fungi:

  • Delicipod
  • Exploding Fruit
  • Freaky Moss
