South Bentinck Arm facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

South Bentinck Arm is a long, narrow body of water, like a fjord, located on the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It stretches for about 40 kilometers (25 miles) and is a side-inlet of the larger Dean Channel. At its northern end, South Bentinck Arm connects with North Bentinck Arm and then flows into the Burke Channel.

What Rivers Flow Into South Bentinck Arm?

Several rivers bring fresh water into South Bentinck Arm.

The Taleomey River

The main river feeding the arm is the Taleomey River. This river starts high up in the mountains, flowing from the Taleomey Glacier, which is just north of the large Monarch Icefield. Near where the Taleomey River meets the arm, you'll find the Taleomy Indian Reserve No. 3 on the west side, close to an area called the Taleomey Narrows.

The Noeick River

A little further north along the inlet, you'll find the Noeick River. There's also a small place called South Bentinck located on the eastern shore of the inlet near this river.

How Did South Bentinck Arm Get Its Name?

The name "Bentinck Arms" was given to both South and North Bentinck Arms in 1793 by a famous explorer named George Vancouver.

Who Was Bentinck?

George Vancouver named these arms after the "House of Portland." This was a powerful family in Britain. At that time, the head of the family was William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland. He was an important political figure, like a prime minister, and the name honored him and his family.
