The South Union Missionary Baptist Church is a very old and important church in Palestine, Texas. It is special because it is the oldest African American church in the southern part of Palestine.
The Church's Story
How It Began
The church started in 1890. It began in a small two-room house. This house was on S. Royall Street in Palestine.
A man named Rev. Dr. R. H. Boyd founded the church. People knew him as the "cowboy preacher." He later started a very important company. It was called the National Baptist Publishing Board. Today, it is the R. H. Boyd Publishing Company. This company is in Nashville, Tennessee.
A New Home and Special Recognition
In 1911, the church moved to its current spot. This address is 805 S. Dorrance Street in Palestine.
Many years later, in 2004, something special happened. A Texas historical marker was put in front of the church. This marker officially recognized the church. It named it the oldest African American church in south Palestine.
