Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council is an important group that speaks for the Noongar people. The Noongar are Aboriginal Australians who live in the southwest part of Western Australia. This group started in 2001.

Its main job is to help the Noongar people with their native title claims. These claims are about their traditional land rights. The Council also helps create Indigenous land use agreements. These agreements help manage how land is used. The Council also works to keep Noongar culture and history strong. They even have a website called Kaartdijin Noongar, which means "Noongar Knowledge".

Understanding the South West Native Title Settlement

The South West Native Title Settlement is a big agreement for the Noongar people in Western Australia. This agreement helps to sort out native title claims. It officially recognizes the Noongar people as the traditional owners of their land.

Why is This Settlement Important?

As of 2020, this is the largest native title agreement ever made in Australia. It affects about 30,000 Noongar people. The area it covers is huge, about 200,000 square kilometers. People have even called it "Australia's first treaty". A treaty is a formal agreement between groups.

Key Parts of the Agreement

The Noongar (Koorah, Nitja, Boordahwan) (Past, Present, Future) Recognition Act 2016 is a law that recognizes Noongar ownership of the land. The settlement includes six special agreements called Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs). On December 19, 2019, a court approved these agreements. The settlement was expected to start in the second half of 2020.
