What Was the Southern Bleachery?
This factory was a "bleachery" and "print works." This means it took plain, unfinished cloth from other textile mills. Then, it would make the cloth ready for clothes and other items.
The factory would bleach the cloth to make it white. It would also dye it different colors. Finally, it would finish the cloth. This made the fabric strong and ready to be used.
The whole property covers about 31.5 acres. It includes the main factory building. There were also warehouses and a tall smokestack. A separate room for the boiler and its own smokestack was also there. The factory even had a special plant to clean water. Two ponds were also part of the property.
A Village Around the Mill
A small village grew up near the factory. Many people who worked at the mill lived there. The village had churches, like Baptist and Methodist ones. Some of these old mill houses are still standing today.
A New Life for the Old Factory
The factory closed down in 1965. It has about 827,000 square feet of space inside. After it closed, a few small businesses used parts of the building. But no big company ever used its huge halls again.
In 2015, a company called Taylors Mill Development bought the main part of the factory. They started renting out space. Now, artists and craftspeople work there. You can also find a restaurant, a brewery, and a bar.
The Southern Bleachery and Print Works is a historic place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This means it is an important part of history.
