Southern red bat range in red |
The southern red bat (Lasiurus blossevillii) is a type of microbat that lives in South America. These small bats are known for their reddish fur. They are an important part of the ecosystems where they live.
How Scientists Study These Bats
For a while, scientists thought the western red bat (L. frantzii) was just a type of southern red bat. But new studies showed they are different. Scientists looked closely at their DNA and other features. This kind of study is called phylogenetic evidence.
Because of these studies, the western red bat is now seen as its own species. Important groups like the American Society of Mammalogists and the ITIS agree with this change. These groups help keep track of all animal species.
The southern red bat was named after a French explorer. His name was Jules de Blosseville. He explored many places in the world.
Where Do Southern Red Bats Live?
Southern red bats live in many countries across South America. You can find them in places like Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil. They also live in Colombia, Ecuador, and the Galápagos Islands.
Other countries where they are found include French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, and Suriname. They also live on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and in Uruguay and Venezuela. This shows they have a very wide home range!
