Southlands Methodist Church is a beautiful old church located in York, England. It is a Methodist church, which is a type of Christian church. The building has a classic Victorian style.
A Look Back: The Church's Story
The building of Southlands Methodist Church began on October 1, 1886. Important people, including the Lord Mayor of York, helped lay the first stones. A famous architect named Charles Bell designed the church.
When it opened on October 13, 1887, it was called 'Southlands Chapel.' It was one of three large Methodist churches built in York around that time. The church has two tall towers and a fancy window. It is made from special white bricks called Walling Fen brick.
The church was built to hold about 750 people. It also had a big central hall and fifteen schoolrooms. The total cost to build it was £6,641.
Important Additions and Changes
In 1893, a pipe organ was added to the church. This cost £438. Later, in 1920, a new hall was built. This hall was for the Young Men's Association and other fun activities. It was also a special memorial to church members who bravely served in the First World War. This hall cost £1,753 to build.
Around 1905, the church's membership saw a change. Many people who worked at the York locomotive factory moved to Darlington. This move affected about 2,000 workers and their families, including some church members.
