Southlands Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church located in York, England. It was built during the Victorian era. The church is an important part of the local community.

Building the Church

The construction of Southlands Methodist Church began on 1 October 1886. Important people from York, like the Lord Mayor, helped lay the first stones. This marked the official start of building work.

The church was designed by a famous architect named Charles Bell. He created a beautiful and grand design for the building.

Opening Day

The church, originally called 'Southlands Chapel', officially opened its doors on 13 October 1887. It was a very important event for the Methodist community in York. It was one of the biggest Methodist chapels built in the city around that time.

Church Design and Features

The church has two tall towers on each side of a fancy window. It is built from white Walling Fen brick, which gives it a bright and distinct look.

Inside, the church was designed to hold many people. It had space for about 750 people to worship. There was a large main hall and fifteen smaller rooms. These smaller rooms could open up into the main hall. This made them useful for Sunday school or other activities.

The total cost to build the church was £6,641. This was a very large sum of money back in 1887. It shows how important the church was to the community. That amount would be worth much more today.

Church Improvements and Memorials

Over the years, the church added new features to serve its members better.

Adding an Organ

In 1893, a large organ was installed in the church. This beautiful musical instrument cost £438 at the time. It helped make the church services even more special.

Building a Community Hall

In 1920, a new hall was built next to the church. This hall was for the Young Men's Association and other fun activities. It was also a special memorial to the church members who died in the First World War. The hall cost £1,753 to build.

Community Changes

In 1905, the church community faced a challenge. A large factory in York, the locomotive works, moved to Darlington. This meant about 2,000 workers and their families also moved away. This change affected the number of people attending Southlands Methodist Church.
