What Was the Armenian SSR?

The Armenian SSR was one of the many republics that made up the Soviet Union. Think of it like a state within a very large country. It had its own government, but it was controlled by the main Soviet government in Moscow.

How the Armenian SSR Began

The Armenian SSR started on November 29, 1920. Just one day later, on December 1, 1920, the leader of Armenia at the time, Simon Vratsian, gave control of the country to the Communist Party of Armenia. The name of the republic was later changed to the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. This marked the beginning of its time as a Soviet republic.

Becoming an Independent Nation

The Armenian SSR existed for many years as part of the Soviet Union. However, in 1991, big changes happened across the Soviet Union. The entire union began to dissolve, meaning it was breaking up into many separate countries. During this time, the Armenian SSR declared its independence. It then became the country we know today as the Republic of Armenia.
