Soyopa is a town located in the eastern part of the Mexican state of Sonora. Its name comes from the Yaqui language, meaning "hot land." This town sits at an elevation of 350 meters (about 1,148 feet) above sea level. It is part of the larger Soyopa Municipality.

History of Soyopa

Soyopa has a long history. It was once the site of an important Jesuit mission called San Joseph de Soyopa. Missions were like early settlements and churches built by missionaries to teach and live with local people.

What Drives Soyopa's Economy?

The people of Soyopa mostly earn their living through a few main activities. These include raising cattle, farming, and mining.

Cattle Raising and Farming

Raising cattle means taking care of cows and other livestock. In the year 2000, there were about 16,000 cattle in the area! Farmers also grow crops like rye, sorghum, and wheat. These crops are important for food and animal feed.

Mining for Silver

Mining has been a big part of Soyopa's history. People started digging for silver here in the 1700s. The town was most successful around 1880 because of these silver mines. This period was its "economic heyday," meaning a time when the town was very rich and busy. However, after a while, the silver mines ran out. When this happened, fewer people lived in Soyopa.
