Spades is a small, unincorporated community located in Adams Township, which is part of Ripley County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
The Story of Spades
Spades was first started in the year 1855. The community got its name from Jacob Spade, who was one of the very first people to settle in the area.
For a while, the community was also known by a slightly different name: Spades Depot. A post office opened there in 1855, and it was called Spade's Depot. Later, in 1883, its name was shortened to just Spades. The post office served the community for many years before it finally closed in 1950.
