Sparks is a small, unincorporated community located in Doniphan County, Kansas, in the United States. It's found along Highway K-7, about 4.2 miles (6.8 km) east of the town of Highland. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government.
History of Sparks
Sparks has a history stretching back to 1871. That year, a post office opened in a place called Highland Station. It served the community for exactly 100 years, closing in September 1971.
The post office was known as Highland Station until October 1908. After that, it officially became the Sparks post office. J. A. Kennedy was one of the people who worked as the postmaster there.
In its early days, Sparks was a busy little community. It had important buildings like a schoolhouse, where children learned. There was also a hotel, a general store for shopping, and a blacksmith shop for metalwork. The community even had its own bank and a union church. This church was special because different religious groups could use it.
