Spearmint and Trademarks

What is a trademark? A trademark is like a special name or logo. A company owns it. No one else can use it without permission.

The words "WRIGLEY'S SPEARMINT" are a trademark. This is true in the United Kingdom.

Back in 1959, a singer named Lonnie Donegan wanted to sing a song. The song was called "Does the Spearmint Lose its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?".

But the BBC (a big TV and radio company) was worried. They did not want to break any trademark rules. So, they asked Lonnie Donegan to change the song's name.

He renamed it "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor (On the Bedpost Overnight)". This new version became a very popular song. It was a top-10 hit in both the UK and the US.
