Speed skiing at the 1992 Winter Olympics facts for kids
Speed skiing was a very exciting sport shown at the 1992 Winter Olympics in France. It was a "demonstration sport," meaning it was there to show people what it was like, but medals weren't officially counted towards the country totals. The event took place in Les Arcs, a ski resort about 60 kilometers from the main host city, Albertville.
Skiers went incredibly fast down a steep slope! Michael Prufer, a 31-year-old doctor from France, set a new world record. He went even faster than his own record from 1988! Philippe Goitschel, whose aunt was a famous French ski champion, came in second. An American skier named Jeffrey Hamilton finished third.
In the women's event, Tarja Mulari from Finland was amazing. She reached a top speed of 219.245 kilometres per hour (136.233 mph). This speed broke the previous women's world record, which was 214.723 km/h (133.423 mph). Speed skiing is all about how fast you can go!
