What is Spider Shot?

When fired, the pieces would fly apart, creating a wider area of impact.
How it Worked
When a cannon fired spider shot, the force of the explosion would push the connected pieces out of the barrel. As they flew through the air, the pieces would spread out due to the chains connecting them. This created a wider, less focused impact than a single cannonball. The goal was not to punch a hole through a ship's hull. Instead, it was to hit a larger area with many smaller, flailing parts.
Why Was It Used?
Spider shot, like its cousin chain shot, was mainly used in naval battles. Its purpose was to damage the enemy ship's rigging. Rigging includes all the ropes, sails, and masts that help a sailing ship move. Imagine many metal pieces swinging wildly through the air. They could easily tear sails, snap ropes, and even damage wooden masts. This would slow down or stop an enemy ship, making it easier to capture or destroy.
