History of the Spink Community
A small community, also named Spink, was started in the township in 1871. At one point, this community was quite important. It even tried to become the county seat, which is the main town where the county government is located.
As time went on, fewer businesses remained in the Spink community. The Spink Cafe was a popular spot where farmers would meet. Gary's Repair was a place to get trucks and tractors fixed. Spink Oil was the local gas station. Spink Oil closed in 1997, and the Spink Cafe was destroyed by fire in 2019. Today, only a few homes are left. There are also storage buildings for the Union County Department of Transportation and a Valley Ag plant.
Future Plans for the Area
There have been talks about building a new oil refinery in the area. This project is proposed by a company called Hyperion Refining, LLC. If built, it would be the first new oil refinery in the United States in many years.
This idea has caused different opinions among the corn and bean farmers in Union County. Some family farms were offered money for their land. These farms have been in the county since the late 1800s. This situation led to a group forming called the save union county group. The proposed refinery has also received a lot of attention from news reporters.
