Spirit of Justice Park: A Green Space in D.C.
Spirit of Justice Park is a beautiful park in Washington, D.C. It is found south of the United States Capitol, which is where the U.S. Congress meets. The park is divided into two parts by South Capitol Street Southwest.
Finding Spirit of Justice Park
The park is surrounded by several streets. To the north, you'll find C Street. D Street is to the south. Delaware Avenue SW is on the west side, and New Jersey Avenue SE is on the east side. This makes it easy to find if you are visiting the Capitol area.
Why Was Spirit of Justice Park Built?
This park is a great example of a "green roof." A green roof is a roof of a building that is partly or completely covered with plants. In this case, the park is the green roof for a large underground parking garage. This garage was built for the House Office Buildings. These buildings are where members of the U.S. House of Representatives have their offices.
The garage and park were built by the Architect of the Capitol. This is a special agency that takes care of the U.S. Capitol Building and other buildings on Capitol Hill. They make sure these important government buildings are well-maintained.
From Buildings to Park Space
To create space for the underground parking garage and the park above it, some older buildings had to be taken down. One of these was the George Washington Inn. This shows how cities sometimes change to make way for new projects. The park now provides a lovely green area where buildings once stood.
