The splendid toadfish (Sanopus splendidus) is a super colorful fish! It's also known as the coral toadfish or the Cozumel splendid toadfish. For a long time, people thought it only lived around the island of Cozumel in Mexico. But guess what? Divers have now found them in other places too, like the reefs near Honduras and up to Cancun!
These fish are part of the toadfish family. They love to hide under coral outcroppings. You can often spot their homes by looking for a sloped patch of sand nearby. They are quite shy and don't like to come out into the open very often.
What Makes Them Special?
Unlike most other toadfish, the splendid toadfish is famous for its bright, amazing colors. It has fins that are a vibrant yellow. These fins also have cool patterns on them. Its head has dark and white stripes, making it look even more unique.
How Do They Look?
The splendid toadfish has eight fins in total. It has two dorsal fins on its back. One is short with a few sharp spines. The other is long and flows along most of its upper body.
Behind its head, you'll find two rounded pectoral fins. These are bigger than the two smaller, pointed pelvic fins located underneath its body. Near its tail, it has a small, rounded caudal fin. All its fins, except for the pelvic fins, have bright yellow edges.
Even with all its bright colors, the splendid toadfish shares some features with other toadfish. It has a flat, wide head and little feelers called barbells. Like many fish that live close to the ocean floor, its eyes are on top of its head. This helps it look straight up, as it doesn't need to see much to the sides. It also has wide jaws filled with small, sharp teeth.
Sounds They Make
When it's time to find a mate, the splendid toadfish makes a special buzzing sound. Divers underwater can actually hear this sound! It's one of the cool ways they communicate in the ocean.
