Spray bottle facts for kids
A spray bottle is a special kind of bottle. It can squirt, spray, or make a fine mist of liquids. You might use one for cleaning, watering plants, or even for perfume!
How Spray Bottles Changed Over Time
Spray bottles have been around for a long time. The very first ones used a rubber bulb. When you squeezed the bulb, air rushed out. This air pulled liquid up from the bottle, making a spray.
After World War II, plastics got much better. This was a big deal for spray bottles! New plastics meant bottles could hold more types of liquids. They also became cheaper to make because machines could put them together very quickly.
The Drackett company, which makes Windex glass cleaner, helped make spray bottles popular. At first, the plastic sprayers were a bit fragile. So, people bought the Windex in a glass bottle and put the sprayer in themselves. This also saved money, as people would reuse the sprayer with new bottles of cleaner. As plastics improved and sprayers became cheaper, companies started selling products with the sprayer already attached.
In the late 1960s, a new type of spray bottle appeared. These had a "trigger" you could pull, like a gun. This design was much easier to use and became very popular. The older pump-style bottles were still used for things like deodorants, where you only needed a small spray and didn't use it often.
How Modern Spray Bottles Work
Unlike the old rubber bulb ones, modern spray bottles use a special pump. This pump works directly on the liquid inside. It pulls the liquid up a thin tube called a siphon tube from the bottom of the bottle. Then, it pushes the liquid out through a small opening called a nozzle.
Many spray bottles have an adjustable nozzle. You can twist it to change how the liquid comes out. You might get a strong stream, a wide spray, or a very fine mist, like a cloud!
The power for a spray bottle comes from you! You have to squeeze the trigger or push the pump. This is different from a spray can, where the product comes out by itself because it's under pressure inside the can.
Many different designs for spray bottles exist. Some of the pumping parts are similar to those found in pump dispensers, which are used for thicker liquids like lotions.
