Spree (candy) facts for kids
Spree is a fun, colorful candy that many people enjoy! It's made by The Willy Wonka Candy Company, which is a brand owned by the Ferrara Candy Company. This company is part of a bigger group called Ferrero.
Spree candy was first created in the mid-1960s by the Sunline Candy Company in St. Louis, Missouri. An employee named John Scout came up with the idea for this unique candy. Later, in the 1970s, the brand was bought by Nestlé. They continued to sell Spree under the popular Willy Wonka brand name.
Spree is known as a "compressed dextrose" candy. This means it's made by pressing together a type of sugar called dextrose. Each piece has a hard, colored shell with a fruity flavor. You can often find Spree in small rolls or in larger boxes, especially at movie theaters. The candy is even advertised as "a kick in the mouth" because of its bold flavors!
There's also a different type of Spree called Chewy Spree. Instead of being hard all the way through, Chewy Spree has a candy shell but a soft, chewy center. These often come in pouches. There's even a smaller version called Mini Chewy Spree, which comes in a special dispenser. Sadly, the Chewy Spree Mixed Berry flavor was stopped in 2015.
