Springfield Barracks is an old military building located in Lancaster, England. It stands on the east side of South Road. This historic building is now a Grade II listed building, which means it's an important site protected for its special history and architecture.
A Look Back: History of Springfield Barracks
The building was completed in 1854. It was designed by an architect named Edmund Sharpe. The style of the building is called Scottish baronial, which looks a bit like old castles. It was built for a local military group called the 1st Royal Lancashire Militia (The Duke of Lancaster's Own).
The barracks got its name from Springfield Hall. This hall was located across the road and later became part of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary hospital site. Around 1883, the militia moved to a larger place called Bowerham Barracks. After they left, Springfield Barracks was used as a drill hall for artillery units. A drill hall is a place where soldiers practice their drills and training.
In 1983, a company called Storey Brothers & Co. bought the building. They made printed sheeting and coated fabric. They changed the old barracks into offices for their White Cross Mills factory.
