Spruce Run is a small, quiet community located in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, in the state of New Jersey. It's not a big city, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings without its own separate local government. You can find Spruce Run about one mile northwest of a town called Glen Gardner. It sits along County Route 628, also known as Hill Road, and Spruce Run Road.

History of Spruce Run

Spruce Run has a long history, especially when it comes to education and religion. People have lived and learned here for centuries.

Early Schools in Spruce Run

The community built its first school house way back in 1766. This was a very important place for children to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic. As the community grew, new schools were needed. Another school was built in 1825, and then a third one in 1874. These buildings show how much the people of Spruce Run valued education for their children.

The Union Church

In 1800, two different Christian groups, the Lutheran and Reformed congregations, decided to work together. They built a "union church" where both groups could worship. This was a common practice in early American communities. It allowed smaller groups to share resources and build a larger, more impressive church.

The church building you see today, called the Spruce Run Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church, was built much later. It was completed in 1870. This beautiful church stands as a reminder of the community's long-standing faith and history.
