The History of St.-Pius-Gymnasium
How the School Started in 1953
The school was founded in 1953 by Bishop Michael Keller. It began as an Internat, which is a special type of boarding school for boys. The main goal was to train about 100 students to become priests.
Back then, students had to pay a fee of 100 Marks to attend. This was the currency used in Germany at the time.
Changes and Growth Over the Years
In April 1964, the school changed its focus. It became a regular high school, open to more students. A new school building was built in 1965 at Gerlever Weg. This is where the school is still located today.
A big change happened in 1969 when girls were allowed to attend. This made the school co-educational. In the same year, another building was added. This new building could hold up to 300 students.
Becoming a Gymnasium and Expanding
In 1976, the school officially became a Gymnasium. This means it became a specific type of German high school. It prepares students for university.
The last students who lived at the boarding school left in 1979. The school then made a major expansion to its buildings in 1980. This helped create more space for all the students.
In 1995, a famous architect named Josef Paul Kleihues designed an extension. This new part of the building included a special music room.
