The History of St.-Pius-Gymnasium
How the School Started
St.-Pius-Gymnasium was founded in 1953 by Bishop Michael Keller. It began as an all-boys boarding school. This means students lived at the school. The main goal was to prepare about 100 boys to become priests. At that time, the school fee was 100 Deutsche Marks.
Changes Over the Years
In April 1964, the school officially became a high school. A new school building was constructed in 1965 on Gerlever Weg. A big change happened in 1969 when girls were allowed to attend the school for the first time. In the same year, another building was built to hold up to 300 students.
In 1976, the school officially became a Gymnasium. This is a type of German high school that prepares students for university. The last boarding students left the school in 1979. A large expansion of the school buildings took place the following year.
Modern Additions
In 1995, a famous architect named Josef Paul Kleihues designed an extension for the school. This new part included a special music room. These changes helped the school grow and offer more to its students.
