The St. Aloysius Catholic Church is a beautiful Catholic church in New York City. It is located in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. The church was built a long time ago, between 1902 and 1904. A talented architect named William W. Renwick designed it. He used a special style called Italian Gothic Revival. Many people think this church is a hidden gem. Because it is so special, it was named a New York City Landmark on January 30, 2007. This means it is an important historical building.
History of St. Aloysius Church
The St. Aloysius church community started in 1899. It has always been cared for by the Jesuit Fathers. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was also a Jesuit.
When the church first began, many of its members were immigrants. They came from countries like Germany, Ireland, and Italy. Today, the church community is mostly African American. They often use lively gospel music during their services. A famous person, Charles Rangel, grew up in this church. He was an altar boy and has been a member his whole life.
Church Design and Art
The church building is made of brick. William Renwick designed it with a very detailed front. It has colorful bands of red brick. There are also special green-blue glazed bricks. These, along with colorful terra cotta, make the outside look delicate and interesting.
You can see beautiful sculptures on the church. These sculptures show images of Christ and the Holy Family. There are also two angels carved into the building. The design of St. Aloysius Church is similar to another church Renwick designed. It is thought that his travels in Italy might have inspired him.
