St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea is a special historic Episcopal chapel located in Rye, New Hampshire. It was built way back in 1876. This beautiful chapel is the only known church designed by the famous Boston architects Winslow & Wetherell. It's also one of the few churches in New Hampshire built especially for people who came to the state for summer vacations. The chapel has a unique mix of Gothic Revival and Stick Style designs. Because of its importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

What Does St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea Look Like?

St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea is found near the ocean in southern Rye. It stands on the east side of Church Road, not far from Jenness State Beach. The chapel is a single-story building. It is made from strong stone and timber. The corners have special brick designs called quoining.

Chapel Roof and Windows

The roof of the chapel is made of slate. It also has a small bell tower, called a belfry. This belfry has a pointed, pyramid-shaped roof on top. Inside the chapel, you can see amazing stained glass windows. These windows were created by famous artists and companies. Some of them were designed by John La Farge, others by Connick Studios, and even by Tiffany & Co..

Inside the Chapel and Its Grounds

The inside of the chapel is just as impressive. Huge wooden beams, called timber trusses, hold up the roof. There is also a beautifully carved oak pulpit. A pulpit is a raised stand where a speaker gives a sermon. The land around the church includes a small graveyard. A low stone wall surrounds the entire property. There is also a special gate called a lich gate. This gate was rebuilt in 1977, looking just like the original one.

The History of St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea

The first Episcopal church services in Rye happened in 1864. They were held at the nearby Farragut Hotel. This chapel was built later, in 1876. It was made to serve the many people who visited Rye for their summer holidays.

Who Designed the Chapel?

The chapel was designed by architects Winslow & Wetherell from Boston. This is their only known building in New Hampshire. It is also the only church they are known to have designed. These architects usually worked on buildings for businesses. They became very well-known for their work after the Great Boston fire of 1872. That fire destroyed many buildings in Boston, and Winslow & Wetherell helped rebuild parts of the city.

Current Use of the Chapel

Even today, St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea is still used. Episcopal services are held there during the summer months. It continues to be an important part of the community's history and summer traditions.
