St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea is a special old church building in Rye, New Hampshire. It's an Episcopal chapel, which means it's a Christian church. This chapel was built a long time ago, in 1876. It's famous because it was designed by architects Winslow & Wetherell, who usually built big city buildings. This chapel was made for people who came to Rye for summer vacations. It mixes different old styles, like Gothic Revival and Stick Style. Because it's so unique, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

What Does St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea Look Like?

St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea is located near the ocean in southern Rye. You can find it on Church Road, close to Jenness State Beach. It's a single-story building made from stone and wood. The corners have special brick details. The roof is made of slate, and there's a small bell tower on top with a pointy roof.

Inside the chapel, you'll see beautiful stained glass windows. These windows were designed by famous artists like John La Farge and Tiffany & Co.. The roof is held up by huge wooden beams. There's also a fancy wooden pulpit, which is where the speaker stands. The church property includes a small graveyard. A low stone wall surrounds the area. There's also a special gate called a lich gate, which was rebuilt in 1977 to look like the original one.

A Church for Summer Visitors

The first Episcopal church services in Rye happened in 1864. They were held at the nearby Farragut Hotel. This chapel was built in 1876 to serve the many people who visited Rye for their summer holidays.

The chapel was designed by architects Winslow & Wetherell from Boston. This is the only church they are known to have designed. They usually worked on bigger business buildings. They are especially known for their work after the Great Boston fire of 1872.

Today, St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea is still used for Episcopal services during the summer months.
