The Beginning: A Parish Church
The story of St. Anne Cathedral began in 1909. At that time, Father Gerasimos Sawaya, who was the first Melkite missionary priest, traveled across the western United States. He visited and helped Melkite communities. St. Anne Cathedral became like a "Mother Church" for many other Melkite communities that started later.
How St. Anne Helped Other Churches Grow
Many churches and missions were founded with help from St. Anne Cathedral. These include:
- Holy Cross Church in Placentia, California
- Virgin Mary Mission in Temecula, California
- St. Jacob Mission in San Diego, California
- St. Philip Mission in San Bernardino, California
- St. Paul Mission in West Los Angeles, California
- Annunciation Mission in Covina, California
St. Anne Church also helped start other communities. These were St. George Church in Sacramento, California, and St. Elias the Prophet Church in San Jose, California. It also helped St. John of the Desert Church in Phoenix, Arizona, and St. Joseph Mission in Seattle, Washington.
Becoming a Cathedral
A big change happened for St. Anne Church on May 20, 2015. Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, gave it a new important title. He named St. Anne Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Los Angeles as a Co-Cathedral. This means it shares the role of a main church for the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Newton.
What is an Eparchy?
In 1976, the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in the United States became an Eparchy. Before that, it was called an Exarchate, which is a smaller church district. On May 8, 1977, a special church service was held at St. Anne. During this service, the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Newton was officially created. Archbishop Joseph Tawil became its first leader, known as the Eparch.
