St. John Catholic Church is an old and beautiful Roman Catholic church. It is located in a small community called Fryburg, in Auglaize County, Ohio, United States. The church parish started in 1848, and the building was finished in 1850.
A Catholic school was also built next to the church in 1877. Both the church and the old school building have special designs. The church looks like a castle with its tall, pointed windows and fancy pillars, which is part of the Gothic Revival style. The old school building has a different, classic look called Federal architecture.
A Special Church in Ohio
St. John's is one of many churches in western Ohio that were helped by a group of missionaries. This group is called the Society of the Precious Blood.
The Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches
This church is one of the oldest Catholic churches still standing in a special area. This area is known as the "Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches". Many churches built around the same time were made of logs and are now gone.
Only one other church from that time, St. Augustine's Church in Minster, is still a church. However, St. Augustine's has been changed a lot over the years. St. John's still looks much like it did when it was first built.
Unique Features of St. John's
St. John's church still has its original brick and stucco outside walls. Inside, the ceiling has beautiful paintings called frescoes. These paintings are a very important part of its design.
In the entire Archdiocese of Cincinnati, there is only one church older than St. John's that has not been changed much. St. John's and its parish hall were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means they are important historical buildings. Many other churches in western Ohio connected to the Society of the Precious Blood were also added to this list.
