You can find the cathedral in downtown Iquitos. It is at the corner of Arica and Putumayo streets. The church is home to Bishop Miguel Olaortua Laspra.

The Catholic Church owns this building. In 1996, it was named a Cultural Heritage of the Nation of Peru. This means it is a very important historical site for the country. Many people see it as a symbol of Iquitos.

Today, it is the tallest religious building in the city. It is also one of the best-kept buildings there. The Iquitos Cathedral is special because it has a crypt. A crypt is an underground room, often used for burials.

History of the Cathedral

The building of the cathedral started in 1911. This happened after an older church on the same spot was taken down. The new church opened its doors on March 16, 1919. The tall tower of the cathedral was finished a few years later, in 1924.
