The St. John the Baptist Cathedral is also known as the Iquitos Cathedral. It is the main Catholic church in the city of Iquitos, Peru. This beautiful building has a special style called neo-Gothic. It is very important to the history of the city center.

You can find the cathedral in downtown Iquitos. It stands at the corner of Arica and Putumayo streets. It is the main church for the Bishop of Iquitos.

A Special Building

The Catholic Church owns this cathedral. In 1996, it was named a Cultural Heritage of the Nation of Peru. This means it is a very important historical site for the country. Many people see it as a symbol of Iquitos.

Today, it is the tallest religious building in the city. It is also one of the best-kept buildings in Iquitos. The Iquitos Cathedral is also special because it has a crypt. A crypt is an underground room, often used for burials.

History of the Cathedral

The building of the cathedral started in 1911. Before that, an older church stood in its place. The new cathedral was officially opened on March 16, 1919. The tall tower, which is a key part of its design, was finished a few years later in 1924.
