How the Church Began
The community that built this church started in 1891. At first, they didn't have their own building. They held their church services in another church. This was the former Grace Lutheran Church. It was located on South 7th and Carson Streets.
Building the Current Church
The church building you see today was built in 1895. It was constructed on the very same spot where they first met. Later, in 1919, the church was made even bigger. A large addition was built onto the original structure.
Recognized as a Landmark
The St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church is considered very special. In 1968, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation named it a historic landmark. This means it's an important building to protect. Later, in 1974, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
