St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church is a historic church in the South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is a Ukrainian Catholic church. This means it is part of a Christian group that follows traditions from Eastern Europe. The church is guided by the Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio.
The Church's Beginning
The church community, also called a parish, began in 1891. At first, they held their services in another church building. This was the former Grace Lutheran Church. It was located at South 7th and Carson Streets.
Building and Growth
The church building you see today was built in 1895. It stands on the very same spot where the first services were held. Later, in 1919, the church was made much bigger. A large addition was built to help it serve more people.
A Recognized Landmark
This special building has been recognized for its importance. In 1968, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation named it a historic landmark. This means it is a very important building in the city's history. A few years later, in 1974, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places across the United States that are important to history.
