Discovering St. Joseph Plantation

St. Joseph Plantation is a fascinating place to learn about history. It shows us what life was like in the past in the American South. The main house was built in 1840.

Where is St. Joseph Plantation?

You can find St. Joseph Plantation at 3535 Hwy 18 in Vacherie, Louisiana. It is very close to another famous site, Oak Alley Plantation. It is also located up-river from Laura Plantation.

A Look at Its History

The story of St. Joseph Plantation involves several families over many years. It began as a large farm in the 1800s.

Early Owners and Families

The plantation was first owned by Josephine Aime Ferry in 1830. Her family managed the property for many years. Later, in 1877, the Ferry family sold the plantation. It was bought by Joseph Waguespack. His son, Aubert Florian, also owned the nearby Laura Plantation.

Merging Plantations

In 1890, Saturnine Waguespack made a big change. He combined St. Joseph Plantation with another property called Felicity Plantation. Together, they formed the St. Joseph Plantation and Manufacturing Company. Today, the plantation is still cared for by the descendants of the Waguespack and Simon families.

What is a Plantation?

In the American South, a plantation was a very large farm. These farms grew crops like sugar cane or cotton. They were often like small villages, with a main house, worker homes, and other buildings. Plantations played a big role in the history and economy of the South.

Architectural Style

The main house at St. Joseph Plantation was built in the Greek Revival style. This style was popular in the 1800s. It often features tall columns and grand entrances, similar to ancient Greek temples.
