Discovering St. Joseph Plantation
St. Joseph Plantation is at 3535 Hwy 18 in Vacherie, Louisiana. It is very close to another famous spot, Oak Alley Plantation. It is also up-river from Laura Plantation.
Early Owners and History
The land for St. Joseph Plantation was first owned by Josephine Aime Ferry in 1830. Later, in 1877, the Ferry family sold it. A man named Joseph Waguespack bought the plantation.
Joseph Waguespack had a son named Aubert Florian. Aubert Florian actually owned the nearby Laura Plantation.
Joining Two Plantations
In 1890, Saturnine Waguespack made a big change. He combined St. Joseph Plantation with Felicity Plantation. They formed a new company called the St. Joseph Plantation and Manufacturing Company.
Today, the plantation is still cared for. It is maintained by the families who are descendants of the Waguespack and Simon families.
