Vacherie is a small community in St. James Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is not a city with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. Vacherie is part of the larger New Orleans Metropolitan Area. The name "Vacherie" comes from a French word that means "cowshed."
A very tall tower, the WZRH/KVDU-Tower, used to stand near Vacherie. It was the tallest tower in Louisiana. Sadly, it fell in 2021 after Hurricane Ida caused damage.
The most famous place in Vacherie is the Oak Alley Plantation. This historic house is known for its beautiful oak trees. There are other old plantations nearby too, like Laura, Desire, St. Joseph, and Felicity. St. Joseph and Felicity plantations were joined together in 1890.
Vacherie has also been used as a place to film movies and TV shows. For example, parts of the TV series True Detective were filmed here.

The United States Census Bureau divides Vacherie into two parts for counting people: North Vacherie and South Vacherie. In 2020, North Vacherie had about 2,093 people. South Vacherie had a larger population of about 3,388 people.
