St. Luke's Episcopal Church is a special old church in New Haven, Connecticut. You can find it at 111-113 Whalley Avenue. This church was built in 1905, but its story goes back even further to 1844. It's a great example of a building style called Late Gothic Revival. What makes it even more important is that it was the second church in New Haven started specifically for African-American people. Because of its history and beautiful design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Exploring St. Luke's Church

St. Luke's Episcopal Church is located in the Dixwell neighborhood of New Haven. It sits on the corner of Whalley Avenue and Sperry Street. The church is made of red bricks and has fancy stone decorations. It's shaped like an "L" if you look at it from above. The main part of the church, where people gather, has a pointed roof.

The sides of the church have strong supports called buttresses. There's also a tall tower right in the middle of the front of the church. The main door is in the center of this tower. It's a round-arched doorway. Above the door, there's a beautiful stained glass window with detailed designs around it. A small connecting part joins the main church to a newer building behind it.

A Church with a Rich History

The story of St. Luke's congregation began in 1844. At that time, African-American members of another church, Trinity Church on the Green, decided to form their own church. They wanted a place that truly felt like their own.

At first, they met in a small chapel that belonged to Trinity Church. Then, in 1852, they bought a building from an African-American Baptist church. This was a big step for them! In 1894, they started collecting money to build the church you see today. The building was finished in 1905.

The church was designed by a local company called Brown & von Beren. This company designed many buildings in New Haven in the early 1900s. St. Luke's Episcopal Church is one of the few churches they designed, making it even more unique.
