St. Luke's Episcopal Church is a special old church located at 111-113 Whalley Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. It was built in 1905. This church is a great example of a building style called "late Gothic Revival." It's also important because it was the second church in New Haven started specifically for African-American people. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, which means it's recognized as a historically important place.

What Makes St. Luke's Church Special?
The Church Building's Design
St. Luke's Episcopal Church is found northwest of the New Haven Green. It sits at the corner of Whalley Avenue and Sperry Street. This area is part of New Haven's Dixwell neighborhood. The church is a single-story building made of red bricks. It has special decorations made from Indiana sandstone.
The church building has an L-shape. The main part, called the sanctuary, has a pointed roof. The sides of the church have strong supports called buttresses. A tall tower stands in the middle of the front of the church. The main entrance is in the center of this tower. It has a round arch above the door. Above the entrance, there is a small, beautifully decorated stained glass window. A connecting part joins the main church to a newer addition. This addition was built in the 1900s and faces Sperry Avenue.
How the Church Began
The story of St. Luke's congregation started a long time ago in 1844. At that time, African-American members of Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven decided to form their own church. They wanted to create a new community.
At first, they met in a small chapel that belonged to Trinity Church. Then, in 1852, they bought a building from another African-American Baptist church. In 1894, the congregation began collecting money. They wanted to build the church you see today. The construction was finished in 1905.
The church was designed by a local company called Brown & von Beren. This company built many buildings in New Haven in the early 1900s. St. Luke's Episcopal Church is one of the few churches they designed.
