St. Peter's Catholic Church is a very old and beautiful church building. It is located at 935 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The church was built in 1884. It is one of the best examples of Gothic Revival style in the city. This means it looks like old European churches from the Middle Ages.

St. Peter's Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This is a special list of places that are important to American history. Today, it is still an active church. It serves a community of people who are part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester.

The Church's Look and Story

St. Peter's Church stands on the south side of Main Street. It is in the southwestern part of Worcester. You can find it right across from the main campus of Clark University.

What the Church Looks Like

The church is made of red bricks with gray granite decorations. It has fancy details in the Gothic Revival style. The building is mostly shaped like a rectangle. A tall, square tower sticks out from the front right corner. The main front of the church also has a part that sticks out in the middle.

The tower has two narrow, rounded windows on its lower levels. The windows on the third level, where the bells are, are taller. The very top of the tower has fancy castle-like decorations and pointed spires.

The front of the church has three doors. One is in the middle section that sticks out. The other two are on either side of it. The main middle door is under a rounded arch. Above it is a roof shaped like a triangle. There is also a row of rounded windows, placed in pairs, above this door. The doors on the sides also have rounded arches. Above them are round "rose windows" on the second floor.

How the Church Was Built

St. Peter's Parish was started in 1884. It was created to serve the many people moving into southwestern Worcester. Building the church began in 1884. However, it took some time to finish. The church was officially completed and opened in 1893.

The church was designed by a skilled architect named Patrick W. Ford. His design helped make St. Peter's Church the beautiful and historic building it is today.
