St. Thomas Primitive Baptist Church is a very old and special church building in a town called Summit, Oklahoma. It was built a long time ago, in 1922, and is the oldest building still standing in Summit. Summit is a town that was historically created for African American families. A person named Reverend L. W. Thomas built this church.
A Special Building
The church building is made of sandstone. It has a front-gabled roof, which means the main roof section slopes down on two sides and has a triangular shape at the front. On top of the roof, near the front, there is a small, square tower called a cupola. This cupola is right above the entrance to the church.
Why This Church Is Important
St. Thomas Primitive Baptist Church is very important for understanding the history of the black community in Oklahoma. It shows how people settled in the area and how their social life developed. Because of its historical importance, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This list includes places across the United States that are important to history.
