St. Andrew's Church churchyard

The Church of St Andrew in Folkingham, Lincolnshire, England, is a very old and important church. It is a Church of England church, which means it is part of the main Christian church in England. This church is so special that it is a "Grade I–listed" building. This means it is one of the most important historic buildings in the country.

The church started being built a very long time ago, in the late 1100s. Most of it was finished by the late 1400s. Over the years, it has been repaired and updated several times, in 1825, 1858, and 1860.

Discovering St Andrew's Church

St Andrew's Church is a big part of the village of Folkingham. It stands out when you look at the village. However, it can be a bit hard to see from the main Market Place.

Inside the Church

When you go inside, you can see many old parts. The church has arches that show a style called "Decorated Gothic." This was a popular way to build churches in the 1300s. The main part of the church, called the chancel, is mostly in an even older style called "Early English." This style was common in the 1200s.

You can also find a very old stone pillar inside. This pillar is from the "Norman" period, which was in the 1000s and 1100s. This pillar once stood next to an opening that led to a small chantry chapel. A chantry chapel was a special small room where people would pray for others.

Outside the Church

On the south side of the church, you can still see some old stocks and a whipping-post. These were tools used a long time ago to punish people who broke the law. They are a reminder of how justice was handled in the past.

The churchyard is also home to the graves of two soldiers. These soldiers fought in the First World War. Their graves are looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. This group makes sure that soldiers who died in wars are remembered and honored.

A Big Storm in 2006

In 2006, the church was damaged by very strong winds. These "gale force" winds were so powerful that they blew down two of the four tall, pointed decorations on the roof, called pinnacles. One of these pinnacles fell onto the church roof. This caused a lot of damage, and it cost more than £100,000 to fix everything.

How the Church is Organized

St Andrew's Church is part of a larger group of churches. It belongs to the Parish of South Lafford. This parish is part of the Deanery of Lafford, which is a local area for churches. All of these are part of the Diocese of Lincoln, which is a bigger region for the Church of England.
