The St Ann's Well Road Congregational Church was once an important church in Nottingham, England. It was a place where people gathered for worship and community events. This church was part of the Congregational Christian group.

History of the Church

The idea for this church came from the Castle Gate Congregational Centre. People wanted a new place to worship in the St Ann's area of Nottingham. The church building was constructed at the corner of St Ann’s Well Road and Alfred Street.

Building the Church

A famous architect named Richard Charles Sutton designed the church. Mr. Wright's company built it. The construction cost about £1,600, which was a lot of money back in the 1800s! The church was big enough to seat 500 people. It officially opened its doors on March 16, 1870.

The Stanwell Players Drama Group

The church became well-known for its drama club, called the Stanwell Players. This group started in July 1946. Their very first play, Little Ladyship, was performed in January 1947. The money they earned from their shows went to help good causes. At first, they supported the London Missionary Society.

When the church closed in 1970, the Stanwell Players found a new home. They moved to the Castle Gate Congregational Centre. Later, in 1975, they moved again to St. Andrew with Castlegate United Reformed Church. The drama group continued to perform until it closed in 1991.

Why the Church Closed

The St Ann's Well Road Congregational Church closed its doors in 1970. The people who went to this church joined the congregation at the Castle Gate Congregational Centre. The church building was later torn down. This happened because the St Ann's area of Nottingham was being redeveloped, meaning many old buildings were replaced with new ones.
