History of St Anne's Church
Early Beginnings in Glasgow
The church community, called a parish, started in 1899. It was created to serve Catholic people in the East End of Glasgow. The first church building was on David Street in the Gallowgate area. A school for the children of the parish was also built there.
A New Church Building
Over time, the number of people in the parish grew. The first church and school became too small. Archbishop Donald MacKintosh suggested a solution. The school was made bigger by using the church building space.
The parish then bought land from a group called the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. This land used to be a place for children and a hostel. The new St Anne's Church was built on this land. Construction finished in 1933.
Architectural Style and Design
The church was designed by an architect named Jack Coia. He created the church using a mix of styles. These were the Romanesque and Byzantine Revival styles. Jack Coia designed about 30 buildings for the Catholic Church.
St Anne's Church has a special shape, like a cross. This shape comes from many curved concrete arches. These arches meet at a central point at the top. Archbishop Mario Conti once called St Anne's the "Jewel of the Archdiocese." This means he thought it was very beautiful and special.
